The Hawthorne Manhattan Annex
The Hawthorne Manhattan Annex was established in 2002 to specifically serve autistic children and their families. Located within a newly renovated wing of Our Lady of Lourdes School in Harlem, the Hawthorne Manhattan provides special education, music, physical education, speech, occupational therapy, and physical therapy to autistic students between 5-12 years of age. Our small classes—six children to one teacher and two teacher-aides—offer students both intensive one-on-one and small group instruction in verbal behavior, academic literacy, reading, social skills, self-management, and problem solving. A central component of the Manhattan Annex is a focus on opportunities for education inclusion and participation in the local community through planned activities that involve students with and without disabilities. Students at the Annex also benefit directly from the rich resources New York City has to offer. Educational outgoings at the Annex are designed to reinforce and general and generalize elements or our curriculum and including trips to museums, aquariums, zoos, and city parks. Expansion at the Manhattan Annex Enrollment at the Manhattan Annex has grown steadily since it opened to 12 autistic students in September 2002. Today, the Annex serves 38 children between 5-12 years of age. With this tremendous growth comes the need for strategic expansion, both in program planning and in physical space. Our Manhattan facility is stretched to capacity and demand remains high: for the 2006-2007 school year alone, Hawthorne staff received 96 application but could accommodate no new students at the School’s current capacity. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
